One of the key sites to promote your business is through facebook particularly through the use of fan pages.
Until now all facebook names are through obscure urls such as www.facebook.com/people/John-Smith/626427215

As of now, you can go to the following address:

http://www.facebook.com/username and get your own user preferred username such as www.facebook.com/JohnSmith

I did that the other day and managed to reserve my own name so get in there quick before someone else does.

Note: for facebook fan pages, there is a restriction as below:

Your Facebook Page must meet two requirements: it must have been live on Facebook prior to the May 31, 2009 cut-off date and have had a minimum 1,000 fans at that time
